The Yellow Prince

The work of Vasyl Barka (real name - Vasyl Kostyantynovich Ocheret, 1908-2003), a talented writer and poet, a representative of the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States of America, remained unknown in our country for many years.

The novel "The Yellow Prince" (1958-1961) is the first major prose work in Ukrainian literature dedicated to the national tragedy of Ukraine - the terrible famine of 1932-1933, which claimed the lives of millions of people. The writer creates a symbolic image of the Yellow Prince, an evil demon who brings with him only destruction, devastation, torment and death. This allegorical image turns into an object of hatred not only of ordinary people, but also of the reader himself.
